Significance of Women's History Month for Current-Day Women of Color

It seems as if 2026 is moving at the same speed as 2025. It is already March, which is set aside to celebrate Women's History. Women's History Month holds significant relevance for current-day women of color. It allows for reflection on both historical struggles and contemporary achievements.

There are several key highlights that warrant reflection. The first is recognizing and celebrating the diverse contributions of women of color through history. These contributions are often overlooked in mainstream narratives. Recognizing and celebrating these contributions help elevate their voices and achievements.

Second, this month, which is carved out to celebrate women, allows for reflection on intersectionality. With this refelction, an emphasis can be made on the intersection of race, gender, and class, which is crucial in understanding the unique challenges faced by women of color. This is an opportunity to discusss how these identies intersect and impact experiences. Also, this month includes a cultural celebration that showcases the risk cultural heritage and traditions of women of color, promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation of their experiences and contributions.

Women's History Month calls for reflection on inspiration and role models. We can honor and share the stories of trailblazing women of color who have paved the way in various fields, inspiring younger generations.

Additionally, Women's History Month creates space to reflect on pressing contemporary issues. It invites critical examination of ongoing challenges such as systemic racism, gender inequality, and economic disparities, while providing a vital platform to address current concerns impacting women of color, including reproductive rights, violence, and access to quality healthcare.

Women's History Month provides an opportunity for reflecting on empowerment and solidarity. This reflection encourages unity among women of color and across diverse communities, fostering a shared sense of empowerment that inspires collective action toward social justice and equality.

At OSAAT, we invite all to not only engage in this reflection during the month of March but also make it an ongoing journey toward equality and justice for women of color, encouraging recognition, empowerment, and solidarity in the fight against systemic barriers.
